Body Movement

Constant Movement in Fighting

Keep moving! Stay busy! Let your punches go! Move your head!

Why should you keep moving? Some people think constant movement is a waste of energy or makes you predictable…but I completely disagree.

Constant movement is what gives you great rhythm, great endurance, great speed, and even be a trickier fighter. In an intense sport like boxing, constant movement is an important skill that you must acquire in order to be a great fighter.

But how?! [Click to read more…]

Joint Strength and Punching Power

Your joints play a tremendous role in generating and delivering power.

It has come to my attention in the recent years of the tremendous role that your joints play in delivering power. Unfortunately, the importance of the joints is commonly neglected in favor of the more popular focus on muscles.

Typically, most people I know are all about the muscles. How the muscles look, how big they are. How to develop powerful muscles. How to train the right muscles. How to get the right kind of “fighter’s muscles”. Etc and etc.

But very seldom do we ever talk about joints. [Click to read more…]

Balance Secrets from a Dancer

I don’t normally write this sort of random article but I learned so much from a private lesson yesterday that I had to share it with my readers. This is the sort of thinking that changes the way you look at things and changes the way you fight forever.

I was so amazed by what I learned, I had to write about it.
I only wish all of you could have been there with me that day. [Click to read more…]

breathing techniques for fighting

Are you getting tired for no reason? Are you running out of air during fights? Or do you just stress out behind your guard and get beat up until the bell rings?

Breathing is an essential function of life. It comes before strategy, before technique, before ANY complicated fighting movements. It’s easy to forget how to breathe because you never learned it in the first place. Breathing was always natural until you got in the ring and got distracted by all the fighting.

…but how do you expect to fight when you can’t even breathe?

Learning how to breathe allows you to rest, think, and attack powerfully!

body movement theory for fighters

Last Friday I was watching a video of Pernell Whitaker when I said to myself, “Damn! How does he MOVE like that?!” I wasn’t looking at his tricky counters or flashy defense. I was mesmorized simply by his incredible body control. I admired the way he waved hands and wiggled his shoulders in front of opponents, even the way he nonchalantly walked around his opponents. I was amazed by the way he MOVED!

Most fighters don’t understand body movement. I was fortunate enough to train in many sports as well as formal dance training. The truth is: I wasn’t really a talented fighter, I only knew how to use my body better than others.

And you won’t be a good fighter until you learn how to move your body… [Click to read more…]

jab with head movement

Did you know…?

8 out of every 10 boxers don’t know how to come in with the jab.

It’s a random statistic I just made up but my point is: hardly anybody moves their head when they come forward with the jab. Anytime you bring yourself closer to your opponent, you’re potentially walking into a dangerous counter punch. For this reason head movement is crucial for all forward movements—ESPECIALLY THE JAB.

It’s time you learned how to SAFELY come in behind the jab. [Click to read more…]

dance for boxing

PHOTO: this is my brother, Brian Nguyen, the tango champion.

My brother tried for years to get me to dance. I refused at first thinking “what the hell does dance have anything to do with fighting?” He was the lover, I was the fighter. Could dance and boxing have been any more different? Turns out, I was wrong. There’s a whole lot fighters can learn from dance lessons besides balance and footwork. [Click to read more…]

How to Stop Wasting Energy

Most fighters don’t know (or can’t admit) that they’re wasting energy. They make silly excuses like, “Oh I just need to relax more.” or “I need to work on my cardio.” No, man…you’re getting tired because your technique sucks. You’re losing fights not because of your cardio but because of the way you fight.

Are you tired of getting tired?!

…if so, then STOP DOING THIS ONE THING… [Click to read more…]
